PLAY SCHOOL Curriculum
- Colours: Revision of colours, primary, secondary and also shades i.e. dark and light.
- Shapes: Square, circle, triangle, quatrefoil, pentagon, trapezium, curved triangle, ellipse, oval and rectangle.
- Practical Life Exercises: These are simple, everyday skills that assist with concentration, independence, co-ordination and order for the child. Some examples are pouring, spooning and dressing frames.
- Sensorial: These are specially designed materials that help the child learn through his/her senses. Shapes, colours, height, length and weight are experienced. The Pink Tower, Broad Stair and Red Rods are some of the favourites you may hear about!
- Mathematics: Using the sandpaper numbers 1-10, each child will learn the numbers with their touch and sight. The Spindle Box, Cards and Counters and many other number activities can help reinforce this.
- Social Skills: Assisting in the child’s development socially and emotionally including conversation, story-time, table manners, coughing with hand over mouth, taking/waiting turns etc.
- Language: The Insets for Design – these are the shapes as mentioned above. Holding a pencil and drawing from left to right develops the fine motor skills which will be used later in primary school.
- The Sandpaper Letters: Phonetic sounds of the alphabet. Touch and recognition.
- Circle Time: This is our quiet time where we reflect on our day, our thoughts, tell our news, play short games and sing songs. This exercise encourages the children to listen to each other and to wait for their turn to speak.
- Arts & Crafts: Gluing exercises, various types of painting, cutting, colouring and seasonal art.
- Music & Movement: Musical instruments and dancing.
- Biology: Life-cycle of a frog, butterfly etc.
- History: Daily weather clock.
- Gaeilge: Cupla focail.
Everyday Activities:
Playdough, colour sorting, matching exercises, jigsaws, library time, cooking and outdoor play.
